Book onto the Trails

Three stunning new multi-day backpacking trails (Lochs, Peaks & Adaptive Adventure) in one of the wildest but most accessible landscapes in Scotland, just 90 mins drive from Glasgow.

Catering for all levels of ability & adaptive adventurers, The Trails are located on an historic hunting estate, only very recently unlocked for public access in collaboration with Oxygen Conservation.

Hand-crafted Trail Maps & interactive navigation, developed in partnership with OS Maps, will guide you into the furthest reaches of these wildlands for a lasting adventure that you will never forget.

The Trail Maps are your guidebook to explore this ancient landscape, educating you on the geology, geography, history, wildlife, habitats and the future of the environment here under the stewardship of Oxygen Conservation.

In one of the wildest corners of Southern Scotland, Invergeldie is a landscape almost untouched by human hands for hundreds of years. Nature still rules here & it is here to stay. Working closely with the land's stewards, Oxygen Conservation, we have created three new adventure trails through this wild landscape. Our goal was to recreate the wilderness trails of the US & Canada, proving that you don't have to fly across an ocean to discover unspoilt landscapes, biodiverse ecosystems & rich natural environments. Three trails, varying in length, difficulty, terrain and recommended ability link points of interest & Wild Spaces to camp overnight. The trails are brought to life through a rich Trail Map & can be navigated using the OS Maps App, which you get a months free access when you book. The landscape here is breathtakingly beautiful and the trails take you deeper into the wild, leaving all traces of civilisation & modern life behind. Each booking ensures you have noone else on the trail for 48 hours, a purposeful decision from our team to provide unrivalled solitude - something that is so difficult to come by now. This is the first Wild Trail of many with discussions already ongoing with landowners of vast estates across England, Wales & Scotland. The future is a wild one.

OUR MISSION

Enable you to find lasting adventure in the UK's wildest places.

Three trails for all levels of ability & experience. Each one taking you into the wildlands.

The Trails

Questions? Find the answers you need here. Anything else, get in touch

1. What do I need to bring with me?

FAQ

You will need to bring everything with you for this backpacking trail. Your kit list should include everything from tent, sleeping system, cooking & hydration system, food, first aid, lighting and of course technically competent clothing & footwear. These trails pose a considerable challenge, regardless of ability & experience & therefore time & care should be taken over choosing & packing the right equipment. A full recommended kit list can be found here.

2. What does self-guided mean?

Self-guided means you will be alone on the trail, with nobody there to guide or support you. You will receive all the information you need when you book to locate travel to, hike, camp & explore the trails through the Trail Map & interactive route cards. It is then your responsibility to use this information to navigate the Trails. You may decide to reach out to a local mountain leader (get in touch if you want some recommendations!) to support you on the trail.

3. How fit, skilled or experienced do I need to be?

The Trails pose a significant physical challenge, regardless of ability and experience. Especially in Scotland where the weather plays a pivotal role in the severity & difficulty of a backpacking trail. The Adaptive & Lochs Trails provide a fantastic introduction into backpacking trails but you will still have had experience navigating in mountainous & moorland landscapes. You or someone in your booking party will have experience of first aid & you will be fit enough to walk at least 20km in a day. To undertake the Peaks Trail, you will be someone that has high level of general fitness & stamina & can walk at least 20km a day over tough terrain & carrying at least 15kg on your back. You or someone in your party will have good knowledge of first aid & will have spent many hours navigating in mountain & moorland environments. We do not recommend you undertake these trails if you do not meet these general recommendations.

4. Do I need to take out travel insurance?

We require you to take out travel insurance when booking a Wild Trail. This is because you are undertaking the trail entirely at your own risk, as if you would when you go skiing and use the piste map. You are entirely responsible for your health, safety & that of anyone else in your party, at all times. Travel insurance is very cheap for a single UK trip & will ensure you are covered for all eventualities on the Trail.

5. What about Right to Roam in Scotland? Can't I just go for free?

Scotland enjoys a very different land access system to that of England and Wales. The Scottish Open Access Legislation means it is possible to roam freely across much of the mountainous & moorland areas of Scotland without recourse or permission. It is a truly wonderful system, built on trust & respect for the land & people that live there and it is made possible due to the vast expanse of remote landscapes that Scotland so boastfully has. There is nothing that we do or Oxygen Conservation does to stop individuals from roaming freely on the landscape here. Nor does anything that we are doing with the creation of these trails undermine those rights. In fact, our hope is that by creating these trails we are enabling more people to visit the area & return, perhaps next time to creat their own trail & adventures. These Trails are a celebration of Scotland, its wild places, wildlife, history and landscape. We have worked tirelessly to build a system that not only enables people to experience backpacking in a new way but to learn from the land, give back to it & manage it carefully. We have learnt lessons from the wilderness trails & national park teams in North America to create the ultimate eco-adventure, putting nature first whilst enabling adventures that you will never forget.

6. Why do I have to book a self-guided trail?

This a great question and one that has two answers. Firstly, we have taken a very concious decision to block book the Trail. This means that when you lock in your travel dates, you have the Trail entirely to yourself for 48 hours. This means that other than a handful of roaming locals & hardy adventurers that are visiting the estate, you won't see a soul. This sense of solitude is an incredible experience & one that is so hard to come by in todays modern world. Secondly, booking the trail means we can proactively manage & track footfall across the estate. This is a prerequsite of the conservation strategy being implemented by the land stewards, Oxygen Conservation. Our booking system has safeguarding practices built in such as the Snap In-Snap Out system so we can keep a close eye on the condition of Wild Spaces as well as the trails.

7. Why are you encouraging people to visit wilderness areas? Leave it alone!

We feel very passionately that the only way to truly gain an appreciation of the wild, is to go there. This sense of appreciation & gratitude stays with you & will influence your decision-making in the future. Our Trail Maps are designed to enrich you with information on the flora, fauna, geology & history here so you learn & grow from the experience. This is a sentiment echoed by our partners Oxygen Conservation and together we are working hard to create 'classrooms in nature' that help transform perceptions.

8. What happens if I have to cancel, or the weather is the cause of a cancellation?

We have an entirely flexible policy on cancellation. In the case of inclement weather or if you need to cancel due to personal circumstances, you are permitted to change the dates right up until the date you leave. This means your adventure does not go wanting & we provide the most flexibility we can to account for the glorious Scottish weather!

9. What happens after I have booked & paid?

Immediately you will receive a confirmation of your booking and a timeline of next steps. You will receive your Trail Map & Adventure Pack 14 days before you travel to Invergeldie in the post & in here will be everything you need to begin planning. A Trail Map & Route Cards will be provided in physical & digital form with links to the interactive & private OS Maps App routes. These can be downloaded into your navigation app of choice. The team at CampWild are also on hand to answer any questions right up until the day you leave, so please do not hesitate to get in touch.

10. I have never wild camped or backpacked before? Can I do this?!

The simple answer is yes. The Adaptive & Lochs Trail have been designed to create an accessible adventure for all range of skills and abilities. You must be physically fit, given the distance, kit required & terrain. We recommend undertaking the Adaptive Trail if you have any concerns or apprehension as this follows existing hunting tracks into the far reaches of the estate, reducing the need to navigate & providing a clear route out of the wilderness. Ultimately, we are here to talk. If you have questions, get in touch & let's see if we can get you out on a Wild Trail!
